How to Choose the Best Electric Pressure Cooker

When looking for the best electric pressure cooker you have to choose based on your family’s needs. What’s best for you and your family may not be what is best for another person so the first thing you need to take into consideration is your needs.

One of your first big decisions will be the size of the cooker. Generally they come in 6 and 8 quarts. Some also have smaller units, but personally I wouldn’t consider the smaller units.

What is the size of your family? Are you a small family of 3 or do you have a total of 6 family members? How many people will you serve per meal?

Also what do you like to cook?

As an example, you can cook a chicken in a 6 quarts and 2 chickens next to each other in an 8 quarts.

Do you batch cook or not?

As a rule of thumb, the 6 quarts can be sufficient for a family of 1 or 2, but if you do any batch cooking you probably will get better value from the 8 quarts unit.

Answering these questions will help you determine the right size you need.

We recommend you purchase a cooker with a minimum capacity of 6 quart and always go larger if you can afford to. Because you can always cook less food in a larger appliance, but not vice versa.

Once you know your size, you will want to look at what and how you want to cook.

Some offer the functionality of 5 devices, some of 7 or even more. For instance you want to consider which of these functionalities you want:

  • Pressure cooking
  • Steam
  • Saute
  • Warming
  • Slow cooking
  • Cooking rice
  • Making yogurt

There are so many available pressure cookers on the market and though you may think that a pressure cooker is simply a pressure cooker there are some that offer a lot more features, presets and accessories than others.

Lastly you want to consider your time, do you want a super fast appliance that will have you making dinner within 30 minutes when you get home?

Or if you want, you can even get a smart unit, with Bluetooth that you can operate via your smart phone and start dinner remotely even before you leave work.

What to Look for in a Good Electric Pressure Cooker

Once you know the size you need and the functionality you would like, the next aspects to consider are…

Safety features

Electric pressure cookers are modern devices that offer more safety features than your traditional pressure cookers but some offer more than others. You will find some of them with up to 10 different safety mechanisms.

Warranty and Replacement Parts

The best electrical pressure cooker will last but you still want to purchase from a brand that stands behind their product with a warranty.

Also consider that over time you may need replacement parts so you want to purchase a brand that has replacement parts readily available.

Adapting Recipes for Your Pressure Cooker

You can cook most of your favorite meals in your pressure cooker. Getting them right, will take some experimenting, but start with the following in mind.

  • You should be able to cook most meals in about one third of the time of cooking a regular meal.
  • You need less liquid, probably half of what you would normally use.
  • The amount of food that you are cooking does not affect your cooking time.
  • Consider adding vegetables that cooks fast towards the end of your cooking time, to prevent them from becoming mushy.

All these appliances come with a basic recipe book. Use them to start out and as you become more comfortable adjust your own recipes.
