Smackfat Ketone Strips: Urine Ketone Testing Strips for Keto Dieters

Those of us who subscribe to a high fat and low carbohydrate diet have good reasons for doing so.

Some may be diabetic and trying to manage symptoms. Some of us change our diets to improve our health and well being, gain energy and mental clarity or to lose weight.

The ideal state for those of us who subscribe to a low-carbohydrate diet is called ketosis where the body uses ketones as fuel rather than glucose.

Keto - Change your fuel

So, if you are here, you probably want to know if your body is in ketosis or not.

When you start out on a paleo or keto diet, you probably just want an easy and cheap answer to whether you are producing ketones: Smackfat's Ketone Strips make the process easy and adjusting your diet a breeze.

What You Get and What the Reading Means

You can expect to find 100 easy-to-read testing strips in their own container, so there will be enough to last through frequent testing. (Keep the container securely closed in between uses.)

Smackfat Ketone test strips are formulated for easy urinalysis—just insert a strip into a urine sample and wait a short time for the strip to change color.

A handy chart on the side of the container will tell you the level of ketones in your urine.

The very first color on the chart, shows you what the strip looks like when you take it out the container and before it comes into contact with urine.

Then it shows the different levels, which are:

  • 0.5 – lightest color – indicating trace levels of ketones.
  • 1.5 – the next color (light pink) – showing low levels of ketones.
  • 4.0 – medium pink – shows a medium amount of ketones in the urine.
  • 8.0 – maroonish – large amounts of ketones present.
  • 16.0 burgundy – very high levels of ketones.

With the Smackfat Ketone test strips, you can get an easy indication of your ketone levels. ‘

How to measure ketones when you start Keto

I often get asked how dark it should be?

The difficulty in answering this question is that these levels will differ from person to person and that once you are keto adapted, you may no longer find ketones in the urine even though you may still be in a state of ketosis.

The levels can also be influenced by how hydrated or dehydrated you are.

When a person is dehydrated, the color can often be darker.

If you get a very dark color, you may want to drink some water and retest. If a very dark color persists, you should consult with your medical practitioner.

In reality when you start out, you want to know that ketones are present in your urine, the exact level is less important.

Smackfat provides much more than just easy ketone testing—you get educational videos both on how to use the strips and how to lead a healthy ketogenic lifestyle.

For easy and supportive ketone testing when you start out on a ketogenic diet, Smackfat is hard to beat.

If you want to take your keto testing to the next level, you may want to consider a breathalyzer or a blood ketone monitoring system.

The KETOSCAN Mini Breath Ketone Meter is expensive, but it is a once of payment and requires no strips. It measures acetone in the breath, so is painless.

It needs to connect to a smart device and they are sold with either a USB connection or a bluetooth connection.

For the most accurate results, you’ll need a blood ketone tester.

The Keto-Mojo testing kit can measure both glucose levels and ketone levels.

It is a finger prick test and you’ll have to buy strips as you need them.

The price of these strips used to be really high, but with more companies making these now, the prices are becoming more competitive.

Marianne - July 28, 2019

What can I do to get into ketosis, if the reading on the strips shows that I am not quite there?

    Noline - July 29, 2019

Hey Marianne, if you are just starting out then the urine reading should be easy to see. If you have been keto for a while, the reading on the urine strips becomes less obvious.

If you know that you are not in ketosis and needs some help, then try these 4 steps to get into ketosis.

JESSICA GODFREDSON - February 3, 2019

I don’t understand what color should I be in??? This is so confusing

    Noline - February 14, 2019

    Hi Jessica

The color depends on a number of factors. Like how hydrated you are, how long you have been following a keto diet and so on. So unfortunately there is not just one answer.

    What color do you get?

Jenny - July 11, 2018

How long do you need to wait, (if any) to read the test? Do the test strips darken as they evaporate? Just wondering because I have returned 15 minutes after a test and it has darkened considerably.

    Noline - July 28, 2018

Hi Jenny, you should wait about two minutes.

I don’t know why it would darken more. Maybe they dry out. As I understand they are not designed to stand for that long, so you won’t get an accurate result if you leave them for too long.

Jen - June 29, 2018

Why my test so light every time ? What does it mean ?

    Noline - July 28, 2018

Hi Jen, the color isn’t really that important and there are many reasons why the color varies with hydration being one of them.

When you start out, all you want is a reading showing you are in ketosis.

Once you’ve been in ketosis for a while, the ketones in your urine may not show up anymore and urine analysis becomes less accurate.

Lorena - June 25, 2018

I always test moderate . is this the optimal reading I want? I’m unsure. Is it best to be higher or lower?

    Noline - July 28, 2018

Moderate is good. You just want to know that you are in ketosis.

Douglas - March 17, 2018

Hello, I just bought the Smackfat Ketone test strips. Is the goal to be in the middle or to the darkest square? I cannot seem to find a straight answer. Please provide a clear response.

    Noline - March 22, 2018

    Hey Douglas

When you start out on a ketogenic diet, you really want any reading. Any level shows you that you are in ketosis.

Once you are completely keto adapted, you may be in ketosis and get no reading though.

There are also a number of factors that can affect the reading. For instance the reading is likely to be darker later in the day. If you are dehydrated it could be darker. If you just finished exercising or just drank a few glasses of water, it could be lighter.

The best practice would be to measure each day at the same time. Create a spreadsheet and then measure daily to see how the reading changes.

I hope this helps. You may also want to read the post again, as I updated the information to try and make it a bit clearer.

This subject deserves a post on its own and like you mentioned it is hard to get a clear straight answer. I’ll get down to it in the next few months.

Let me know how else I can be helpful.

Farah - February 8, 2018

I am very confused. Mine comes out really dark. Does that indicate low insulin or dehydration. How do I find out? I have never been a diabetic otherwise

    Noline - March 22, 2018

Hey Farah, I don’t know what it means for you. Dehydration can make the color darker, so drink some water and test again an hour later. If the dark color persists consult a medical professional.

    All the best…
